Are video games a waste of time?

Joe Rogan says video games are a waste of time. Who cares? Apparently some people. I only know Joe Rogan from the 1990’s when he hosted a shitty TV show where people ate roaches in an attempt to make money. Other than that I couldn’t tell you much about the guy. He has a podcast where he smokes weed with a mix of celebrities and weirdos. I don’t have an interest in any of that. So I don’t watch it.

I don’t play video games either. I did when I was a kid. But I lost interest in it when I found out about women and vaginas. I dedicate most of my time these days to getting my penis inside of said vaginas. When I am not doing that I sometimes read books. I also travel quite a bit and try to experience what the world has to offer.

I am not against video games though. Or Joe Rogan. I simply don’t give a fuck about either. Maybe you are different. In fact I am sure you are. Everyone is special in our own way. My mother told me that when I was 5 and it always stuck with me. Maybe that’s one reason I refuse to be a cog in the machine.

Wasting time is never a waste

But what about the underlying question? Are video games a waste of time? Sure. So is having sex without the intention of reproducing. Or running when nothing is chasing you. Or throwing a Frisbee back and forth with your friends.

I am going to let you in on a little secret. Life is a waste of time. Yes, you read that right. It’s all a big nothing and it doesn’t really matter. Born to die. World is a fuck. Kill em all 1989. I am trash man. For real though.

Life exists to reproduce life. In fact as individuals we don’t even have to do that! Whatever we do is truly up to us. That’s why I could never accept entering the rat race and working just to die of old age. So instead I hit the road and never looked back. And now here I am.

Other people are different. Some stare into the abyss and decide to use their time to invent things or try and cure cancer. Others break and go psycho. Then there are all those who give in to the nothingness and commit slow suicide with things like drugs. Then you have short bald guys who smoke lots of weed and pontificate on their great philosophical findings… for example that “video games are a waste of time.”

Do what you want to do!

You might love video games. So you play them and become an expert. Then you go on to create your own video games. Or you make a blog to write about them and that becomes your job. Or you play them for 30 years, decide it was a waste of time, then campaign against them and for a China-style regime. Or you just play them and that’s it. It’s all on you!

After living this life and traveling around the world for years this all makes perfect sense to me. But any time I talk to a buddy back home or even a regular guy in a place like Japan who seems totally locked into a preprogrammed lifestyle I realize I am actually in the minority. I go with the flow when it is easy but I never let that flow take me under. For others the simple idea that you can make your own way in life seems insane.

I wouldn’t dream of spending 8 hours playing a video game. But maybe a hardcore gamer wouldn’t dream of flying half way around the world and blowing a load into an Indonesian hooker. So what? That doesn’t mean either one of us is wrong. We’re two guys living our lives the best way we know how.

At the end of the day that is all we can really be expected to do. So don’t listen to what I have to say. Or Joe Rogan. Unless you want to. Make your own decisions in life, the best way you can, based on the information and experience you have. In the long run we’re all going to be dead anyway. So what is there to be afraid of? Be a stand up guy. Have a heart and a backbone. Try not to hurt anyone. And live as long as you can and as well as you can. Then none of your time wasting will have been a waste at all.
